This is a costume pattern and tutorial, with instructions to sew your very own medieval / Viking age hood inspired the Skjoldehamn find – with 2 variations, the simple version and the version with the head comb and ties (as the extant hood found in the Skjoldehamn excavation). This tutorial leads you through the creation of a hood, modeled after an extant hood from the 11th century Skjoldehamn find in Norway. This is a basic pattern tutorial, suitable for all skill levels. Absolutely perfect for costumes, reenactment, cosplay, and fantasy fashion projects!

Head circumference is measured around the crown of your head, above your eyebrows.

Materials required for this project:
1-5/8 yd fashion fabric – wool or cotton flannel recommended
*optional 1-5/8 yd lining fabric – linen or cotton flannel recommended
1 yard thin cording (½ inch or less)
* This is NOT a “just learning to sew” tutorial. You MUST have Basic to Intermediate knowledge of sewing before trying this project. It is best if you know how to do the following:
A. How to place, pin, and cut patterns out of fabric.
B. How to measure using a tape measure. *
C. Basic sewing using a home sewing machine.
D. How to align both straight edges for sewing.
